Edward Prutschi received his B.A. in Political Science (International Relations) from York University and his LL.B. from Osgoode Hall Law School.
At Osgoode, Mr. Prutschi participated in the Intensive Program in Criminal Law, clerking for Mr. Justice Victor Paisley of the Superior Court of Justice. After articling for the law firm of Goodman Philips & Vineberg (now Goodmans, LLP), Mr. Prutschi started his own practice focused on criminal law and quasi-criminal litigation and has remained firmly in the criminal law field throughout his career.
Mr. Prutschi appears routinely in courts all across Ontario. He is a former faculty member for the Criminal Law course at the Law Society of Upper Canada’s Bar Admission Course where he instructed law school graduates in criminal procedure prior to their admission to the profession. He has twice been nominated as one of the 25 Most Influential Lawyers in Canada by Canadian Lawyer Magazine.
Mr. Prutschi once certified as an Intoxilyzer Breath Alcohol Technician, learning the science and technical specifications that can come in very handy as a drunk driving lawyer when defending persons charged with related offenses.
He has defended hundreds of cases of domestic assault and is particularly skilled at working with family lawyers and anger management counselors to resolve these cases as quickly as possible to the benefit of his clients.
Mr. Prutschi is a frequent commentator for radio, television and print media appearing regularly for CTV News as an official Legal Analyst. He has been quoted in every major Toronto newspaper for his views on high-profile cases he has worked on and the criminal law in general and authors frequent guest columns on legal issues for the Toronto Sun. Mr. Prutschi is probably best known for his work as the Chief Legal Analyst for NewsTalk1010 radio in Toronto.
Mr. Prutschi is also a sought after speaker in the area of criminal law and beyond, providing engaging and entertaining addresses to the Ontario Bar Association, The Commons Institute, The Law Society of Upper Canada, The Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police, Osgoode Hall Law School, Western University Law School, Parachute Vision Network, B’nai Brith Canada, the Community Hebrew Academy of Toronto and many others. Mr. Prutschi has adapted keynote addresses drawing on his decades of intriguing and entertaining tales from the courtroom to create multimedia presentations with customizable lessons suitable for a wide array of corporate and not-for-profit audiences.
When not vigorously defending the interests of his clients, Mr. Prutschi, a former Governor of York University, can be found protecting the interests of his community through his active participation on the boards and committees of numerous organizations. He is a graduate of the United Jewish Appeal Federation’s prestigious Joshua Institute, is a winner of their prestigious Shem Tov award and holds a certificate in Jewish Communal Leadership from the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management.
Mr. Prutschi is an active member of several professional organizations including the Criminal Lawyers’ Association where he has served numerous terms as the Association’s representative to the Metro-North courthouse.
